On March 3, 2026, an event titled “Women’s Heart – Healthy Life: Strong Women of Azerbaijani Medicine” was held in the Red Hall of Azerbaijan Medical University, organized by the Azerbaijan Society of Cardiology.
The main purpose of the event was to increase awareness about cardiovascular health in women, promote a multidisciplinary approach, and highlight the contributions of prominent female physicians and scientists who have played an important role in the development of Azerbaijani medicine.
In the official opening speech, the President of the Azerbaijan Society of Cardiology, Prof. Yasmin Rustamova, spoke about the role of women in the healthcare system and their achievements in both scientific and clinical fields.
During the opening ceremony, several prominent female figures who have made significant contributions to the development of medicine, particularly cardiology in Azerbaijan, were honored with commemorative plaques. Among them were Dr. Malahat Asgarzade and Dr. Aziza Ashurova for their many years of dedicated service to Azerbaijani cardiology; Dr. Elnara Rafibeyli, the first female pioneer who laid the foundation of echocardiography in the country; and PhD Dr. Rahima Gabulova for her important role in the development of cardiology research and its integration into clinical practice.
The professional achievements of Dr. Sevinc Najafova and Dr. Shafag Nazirova, the first female interventional cardiologists in the country, were also highlighted. The contributions of Prof. Saadat Mahmudova, who established a strong academic school in family medicine, as well as the leadership roles of Prof. Malahat Sultanova, Prof. Gulnaz Dadashova, and Dr. Sevda Alizade in healthcare management were highly appreciated.
It should be noted that Prof. Yasmin Rustamova is the first female President of the Azerbaijan Society of Cardiology. This fact itself reflects the growing role of women in medical leadership and the increasing institutional trust in female professionals. A strong healthcare system is built not only on technology and infrastructure, but also on the dedication, professionalism, and commitment of women physicians.
It was also emphasized that the initiative aims to promote early detection of cardiovascular diseases in women, reduce risk factors, and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
The scientific program included presentations and interactive discussions on topics such as the unique characteristics of the female heart, the impact of hormonal changes on cardiovascular health, proper nutrition, stress management, and maintaining a balance between professional and family life.
The event “Women’s Heart – Healthy Life: Strong Women of Azerbaijani Medicine” remained memorable both as a scientific platform and as a tribute to the women who have left a significant mark on the history of healthcare in Azerbaijan. It once again demonstrated that female leadership and professionalism play a crucial and leading role in the development of the country’s healthcare system.
